Poquoson police arrested three more York County men in connection to the assault of an off-duty York-Poquoson Sheriff’s deputy and another man at the Owens Marina on July 4. Donald and Justin Stevens were charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and committing an act of violence by a mob with Justin incurring an additional charge of malicious wounding. Zachary Warthan was charged with malicious wounding and committing an act of violence by a mob, all three turned themselves in to theVirginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
A 22-year-old man was airlifted to MCV hospital in Richmond after he was hit by a train Wednesday morning in James City County. Police believe the man had been drinking and passed out on the train tracks on Richmond Road at about 7:30 a.m. when a CSX freight train heading east hit him, Emergency personnel arrived at the area near Route 199 after the man called them about the accident himself. The man received severe injuries to his leg but was conscious when he was taken away.
DOMINION HAS BROUGHT ITS NEWEST POWER PLANT ONLINE. THE VIRGINIA CITY HYBRID ENERGY CENTER, IN WISE COUNTY, BEGAN PRODUCING POWER TUESDAY. THE PLANT PRODUCES ENERGY BURNING COAL AND WOOD, ALTHOUGH SPOKESMAN JIM NORVELLE SAYS IT IS “CLEAN” COAL TECHNOLOGY. THE PLANT EMPLOYS 84 PEOPLE IN AN ECONOMIC DEPRESSED REGION OF THE STATE. THE AMOUNT OF ELECTRICITY IT WILL PRODUCE WILL COVER 146-THOUSAND HOMES AT PEAK DEMAND. IT TOOK FOUR YEARS AND NEARLY TWO-BILLION TO BUILD.
Suffolk police are currently investigating a suspicious death. A call was received at 8:33 p.m. from a concerned citizen who said he hadn’t seen his neighbor and requested a welfare check, when officers arrived at the home on Woodruff Street they located a deceased female victim inside the residence. The investigation is ongoing.
Mathews County has been awarded an $85,000 Green Streets-Green Jobs-Green Towns grant by the Chesapeake Bay Trust to help pay for stormwater management and associated improvements in downtown Mathews. The money will be used in conjunction with the $776,000 Phase I VDOT Enhancement Grant the county was awarded to pay for new sidewalks, streetscaping, and other improvements to Main Street between Brickbat Road and the entry to the Food Lion parking lot.
