A Hampton Roads fast ferry service has been pitched as viable commuter alternative to congestion Metro Marine wants to perform a test run in October and says an introductory route connecting Peninsula and Southside docks could be operating in as little as a year. They are proposing a “concept proving route” that would connect locations in downtown Hampton and Newport News with Naval Station Norfolk, the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and other locations in Suffolk and downtown Norfolk.
Summer reading programs at York and Poquoson libraries are bursting with participants. About 900 children ages 2 to 12 take part in the child program at the York County libraries. Poquoson’s library has enrolled 313 in its child summer reading program and expects to surpass last year’s 378 enrollment by the end of summer. Libraries in York and Poquoson conduct separate summer reading programs for children, teens and adults. While almost everyone receives a weekly prize for reading, grand prizes ranging from bicycles to Amazon gift cards to a Nook eReader are offered to those who complete a reading goal set by the library for their age group.
After a nearly eight-month investigation, York-Poquoson deputies have arrested a second juvenile in connection with a convoluted carjacking last year that ended with the vehicle ramming a gun store in Gloucester before the subjects crashed another car during a police chase down Route 17. York-Poquoson Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 17-year-old male on July 6 and charged him with carjacking, the use of a firearm in a felony and brandishing a firearm. Another teenager, a 16-year-old male, was arrested in November and pleaded guilty last month to charges of carjacking and the use of a firearm in a felony, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The U.S. Navy says a Virginia-based helicopter crashed Thursday in the Gulf nation of Oman with five crew members aboard. A spokesman for the Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, gave no immediate word on the fate of the crew. But an Omani air force official said three of them have been found so far and are being treated in a hospital. No hostile activity is suspected. An investigation is under way into crash of the MH-53E Sea Dragon, the helicopter was assigned to a mine countermeasure squadron based in Norfolk, Va., and was involved in heavy lift operations when it crashed 58 miles southwest of the capital Muscat.

The new operators of the State Fair of Virginia are promising a family-friendly, agriculture-centered exposition. Farm Bureau President Wayne Pryor says he couldn’t think of a better place to put the state’s agriculture industry on display, while Universal President Mark Lovell promised to deliver what he called a clean, safe and family-friendly fair. Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd P. Haymore called the marriage of agriculture and tourism an “economic powerhouse.” Universal purchased the property in May for $5.67 million from the debt-ridden former operator of the 150-year-old fair.The fair is scheduled to run from Sept. 28 through Oct. 7.
