A trial is scheduled in January for a man accused of slaying a Gloucester woman in her Hickory Ford residence in July 2011. Richard Earl “Ricky” Witcher Jr. appeared briefly in Gloucester County Circuit on Monday morning, but did not speak. Witcher, 32, is accused of fatally shooting Karen Kay Kelly with a rifle on July 27, 2011. Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Megan Zwisohn said she wants to ensure that Kelly’s name can’t be dragged through the mud “just because of the way she may have lived her life.” Witcher is being held without bail in the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center pending his trial. Witcher’s trial is scheduled for Jan. 14 and 15, 2013.

The Virginia Living Museum could close if it doesn’t secure additional funding or avoid costs over the next year or two. Page Hayhurst, the museum’s executive director, told the Daily Press that the VLM has been running with a large operating deficit in recent years, and will likely use up its remaining $400,000 in reserves during the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2013. Hayhurst said they need about 10 years of additional funding or cost savings to buy time to build up an endowment fund, which is the true solution to the museum’s financial problems.
